Known for hits like “Passionate Kisses” and “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her,” acclaimed singer-songwriter Mary Chapin Carpenter began her career as a folk-influenced performer in the Washington, D.C. area later finding favor on Country radio, where her emotionally intelligent songs first appealed to mass audiences. Beginning with 1987's Hometown Girl, she wrote and sang in the contemporary singer/songwriter vein, but moved into country-leaning material with 1990's Shooting Straight in the Dark, which included the hit single "Down at the Twist and Shout." Released in 1992, Come on Come On was a commercial breakthrough, selling over two million copies." 1994's Stones in the Road, was more folk-influenced but proved to be a major commercial success, selling over a million copies within its first six months of release. The album's lead single, "Shut Up and Kiss Me," became Carpenter's first song to hit number one on the Hot Country Songs chart and won her a Grammy for Best Female Country Performance. With 2001's Time Sex Love Carpenter gradually began to step away from commercial country, returning to her roots in contemporary folk and exploring more personal themes on 2007's The Calling and 2016's The Things That We Are Made Of which registered with her most loyal fans.

Throughout her celebrated career, Mary Chapin Carpenter has won five Grammy Awards, two CMA awards, two Academy of Country Music Awards, and is among only fifteen women inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame. On the heels of the COVID-19 pandemic, Carpenter recorded two albums in 2020 - The Dirt And The Stars and One Night Lonely recorded live without an audience at the Filene Center at Wolf Trap in Virginia. The latter of which received a nomination for “Best Folk Album” at the 64th Grammy Awards.
